Outrigger and SUP Rules and Safety Procedures

  1. We will use a "3-2-go" race start for each race. All racers will be on the water 5-10 minutes before their scheduled start time. At 30 seconds to start, your race official will whistle 3 short blasts. At 20 seconds to start, your race official will whistle 2 short blasts. All racers should be at or behind the starting line, holding position, at this time. Do not jump the starting line. The race will then be started with one long air horn blast. All racers must follow directions of the race officials prior to start.
  2. All paddlers must wear a PFD. All SUP paddlers must also wear a safety leash.
  3. Buoy turns: All buoy turns are left-turns (must be approached from the right). The first person into the turn has the turn. If you are going into a turn, and someone is into it before you, give them the turn. Do not bust into them or force them out of the turn.
  4. In the event of an OC capsize or SUP fall, "good sportsmanship" requires other teams/racers to visibly observe the capsized team to ensure they are ok and intervene if safety demands it. In the event of an emergency, contact should be made with the sweep boat.
  5. A sweep boat will accompany each race longer than 1000M. All racers must follow instructions provided by the sweep boat.
  6. Race officials will make safety determinations related to weather and/or other hazards. All decisions are final.

Additional SUP Rules

  1. Drafting is not permitted.
  2. SUP racers must wear their race number (sharpie pen) on their RIGHT calf (or upper arm).
  3. In the event that a SUP paddler needs to rest, s/he can hold the sweep boat but cannot make forward advancement (i.e., the sweep boat must be stopped).
  4. A SUP paddler who falls in the water may take 5 prone strokes before being required to stand up again.
